Professor NIma Mesgarani and collaborator Guillermo Horga, M.D. (Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Division of Translational Imaging at CUMC) have won the 2016 Irving Institute Collaborative and Multidisciplinary Pilot Research award for Basic Science and Clinical/Translational Investigators (CaMPR-BASIC) for their proposal “Decoding subjective speech perception in schizophrenia.”
The CaMPR program was created to offer support to multidisciplinary research teams between Morningside and CUMC. It fosters the mentorship of upcoming research teams and pushes CUMC’s research capacity to its maximum potential.
The proposal aims to tackle the underlying neural mechanisms that lead to auditory hallucinations in those suffering from schizophrenia. The goal would be to understand how these psychotic symptoms are produced in the brain and with that eventually providing a roadmap for new treatment options.
