Prof. Shih-Fu Chang has been named the recipient of IEEE 2009 Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, for pioneering contributions to automated image classification and search.
Prof. Chang and his group have developed innovative theories, algorithms, and systems to facilitate efficient searching over large collections of visual content including both still images and videos. With broad applications in various domains, his research has demonstrated unique capabilities for content-based image search, large scale semantic modeling, and automatic video pattern mining.
The IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award is one of IEEE's major technical field awards. It recognizes outstanding early to mid-career contributions to technologies holding the promise of innovative applications in the IEEE fields of interest. The award consists of a bronze medal, certificate, and $10,000 prize. IEEE, consisting of more than 375,000 members and 38 societies, is an international leading professional association for the advancement of technology.
