Maria Gorlatova, is the Sternberg Family Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, she earned her PhD in electrical engineering from Columbia Engineering in 2013 under the advisement of Gil Zussman, has been appointed to the 2026 Bass Chair at Duke University, awarding her excellence in research and undergraduate teaching.
An innovator in next-generation augmented reality and mobile systems, Gorlatova develops wearable AR technologies and edge computing platforms that enable more responsive, context-aware and scalable interactive experiences. Her work explores novel applications of AR, including systems that can assist with neurosurgery, as well as broader uses in intelligent computing and human-centered technology.
At Duke, Gorlatova is also recognized as a dedicated educator and mentor. She regularly reinvigorates course curricula, brings real-world applications into the classroom and mentors students to take leading roles in research, including as lead authors on papers. Her work with the Karsh STEM+ program further reflects her commitment to expanding student opportunities while maintaining a cutting-edge research portfolio.
