Title: Integrated Intelligent Sensor Systems

Abstract: Sensors and actuators are the interface between the real world, where we live, and the digital world, where information is processed and exchanged. Integrated circuits are the bridge between the two worlds. Due to the fundamentally different sensing or transduction mechanisms in each domain (optical, capacitive, piezoelectric, electrochemical, mechanical, etc.), these circuits must be highly customized. As the number of sensors in use is still growing rapidly (over 10 on a smartwatch or phone, up to ~100 on a car), it is more critical to extract information on the “edge,” very close to or on the sensor itself. Custom analog, mixed-signal, or digital circuits can extract features, minimize raw data transfer, and reduce power consumption, while safeguarding user privacy or outputting semantically meaningful results. In this talk, I will discuss image sensors for cancer detection, analog in-memory compute networks that provide intelligence on-chip, and a toxic gas sensor system.

Bio: Efthymios Philip Papageorgiou has been a Staff Engineer at Qualcomm Technologies since 2023. He previously held positions at Bosch Corporate Research, Apple, and SiLC Technologies. His focus includes sensor circuit and system design for a variety of applications including biometrics, user interaction, and environmental monitoring.

He received his B.S. degree from Columbia University in 2014, summa cum laude, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2019, both in Electrical Engineering. He received the Edwin Howard Armstrong Memorial Award from the EE Department, Columbia University, in 2014, the Berkeley Fellowship for Graduate Study in 2014, the ADI Outstanding Student Designer Award in 2016, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in 2016, and the UC Berkeley Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award in 2019.

He has published more than 20 papers and is the co-inventor of six granted patents and two pending patent applications.
