Merida is a beautiful Spanish colonial city and the capital of the state of Yucatan, it has a population of around 1 million.  The downtown area is the old, historical section, while the surrounding city is modern, including malls, movie theaters and anything else you might expect.  As a tourist, though, the interesting part is downtown, where the hotel, museums, and historical buildings are.

If you come early or you are able to stay a few days after the wedding, there are lots of things to do and places to go that are a day trip outside the city.  We are planning on organizing a big group excursion with any of the friends who are able to stay, so try to plan some extra time!
