Some tips regarding getting your ssh/X11 connection going:
- In contrast to the instructions some other
tips/tricks, you do not have to set the $DISPLAY variable manually. Use
ssh for X11 forwarding and it will set the $DISPLAY variable
automatically on the remote machine. Depending on your
configuration, you might have to invoke your ssh with the -X option:
- ssh -X
[email protected]
- (replace studentname with your account name; replace machine with
the name of a machine (see above));
after logging on, verify
if $DISPLAY is set in your shell with
run and make sure you get a clock on your
computer; then, try
to start cadence.
- If you are working remotely, it might make sense to do compression
of the traffic with the -C option:
- From a Windows machine, if you get the error message "Failed to
find either 24-bit True Color or 8-bit Pseudocolor visual" when you
try to run icfb, make sure your desktop is set to "True color (32bit)";
right-click on the desktop -> Properties to change this.
- From a Windows machine, if you use PUTTY as your ssh client and
xclock etc. do not display, make sure to check 'Enable X11 Forwarding'
and then type in "localhost:0" for the X Display Location under
SSH/Tunnels of the PUTTY configuration window.
