Introduction

Project Overview

FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM) technology. It's used worldwide to provide high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio.In this design project, we implement an ultra-low power FM receiver on a single chip to receive and demodulate commercial FM radio signals. Supplementary circuitries like matching networks and clock generation have been implemented using off-the-shelf components on our custom PCB.

Objective of the Project

The objective of this project is to implement an FM receiver working at commercial FM radio frequencies, to produce a mono-audio signal, with a chip power consumption less than 1mW.

Commercial FM Radio Band

In the United States, commercial FM radio signals are between 88MHz and 108MHz. Each channel occupies a bandwidth of 200kHz. Minimum spacing between two adjacent channels is 500kHz. After demodulation, the mono-audio signal is between 30Hz and 15kHz of the channel. Our chip is designed to demodulate the mono-audio signal.
