Prerequisite:

• ELEN E4314 and E6312.
• Qualified student must have a very good understanding of circuit analysis, electronics, electronic devices and models, and analog circuit design.
• Students need to be familiar with circuit simulation (Spectre) and CAD tools (Cadence design environment).
• This class will cover advanced topics in RF integrated circuit design. This class should NOT be your first design class.
• If you have not taken the pre-requisite courses, but think that you have sufficient experience, you need to contact me before you enroll. Pre-requisites will be checked at the beginning of the term.

Course Topics (subject to change)

• The course will focus on the design of RF front-ends for integrated transceivers for wireless communications.
• Overview of wireless communication systems.
• Receiver architectures.
• Transmitter architectures.
• Noise, sensitivity; Nonlinearity and distortion; Dynamic range.
• Low-noise amplifiers.
• Mixers.
• Oscillators, phase-locked loops and frequency synthesizers.
• An extensive design project is an integral part of the course.

Design tools

Computer-aided analysis techniques are extensively used. The latest industry-grade CAD tools and simulation tools are used in this class. See the Design Tools page.

Textbook:

The course is based on a combination of instructor's notes, technical papers and textbook chapters.

The textbook we will use most is:

• B. Razavi: "RF Microelectronics" , Prentice Hall, New Jersey, 1998.

• T. Lee: "The design of CMOS Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuits" , 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2004.

Remote Students

Remote students need the ability to remotely run the design tools on our VLSI/CISL Teaching machines in Mudd 12th floor. See the Design Tools page for the available remote login software.

Make sure your are confident you have a sufficiently fast internet connection (broadband). Make sure you understand the use of remote access tools before you register for this course as a remote student.

We will not be able to help you setting up that connection since it is too specific to your particular computing setup and internet connection. CVN might be able to offer specific support.
