All students will participate in group projects which will involve tracking, mixing and effects processing, and mastering tasks. Finished projects will consist of audio CDs as well as written reports detailing all design, sound engineering, and signal processing considerations. The project will allow students to perform in-depth work in any one of the subjects covered in the course: recording, mixing, mastering, and design of signal processing algorithms.
Additional information about project assignments will be posted here soon. In the meantime, you can start looking at the material provided in the "Reading" list.
The group assignments are now posted (see Group Assignments). We accommodated all individual requests; the rest were assigned in a random way.
Each group will receive a Digidesign Mbox USB-based audio interface with Pro Tools LE 6.1 (Win/Mac). The hardware will have to be returned on the day of the final examination, in perfect working order and with all original packing material. One person from each group will sign a form under which he/she will be responsible for the replacement cost, should the hardware or software (CD-ROM) is damaged or lost.
Each group is encouraged to record their own tracks. For those who do not want or cannot create their own, we will distribute a sample session with just raw tracks. In both cases, the groups will have to perform a complete mix, including effects, and also implement their own mix bus compressor in MATLAB. For more details, download the project requirements file.
Projects are due on Friday, May 7th at 5pm EDT [NEW TIME: 12 MIDNIGHT]. They should be uploaded at the FTP site flavor.ee.columbia.edu, using the class' user name and password. The requirements file describes the exact organization of the data (Pro Tools files, MATLAB code, project report, etc.). A CD containing all projects (final mixes) will be distributed to the class on the day of the final (May 11th). Each group should assign one person to give a very brief (3-4min) presentation of their project, after which we will listen in to the entire final mix. We will have all Pro Tools session files at hand from all groups, so you will be able to show what you have done on the projection screen. Project presentations will be immediately after the final on May 11th.
The best project team will win free E4896 T-shirts (one per person). If you are curious how they look like, click here.
