  • About batuta

batuta is a package of Java applets and tools developed by Nemo Semret, for creating, editing, and inter-active display of IP network topologies on a geographical map. It is named after Ibn Batuta (1304-1378), believed to be the most widely traveled medieval figure (the historical novel "Leon L'Africain", by Amin Maalouf is based on his life).

batuta requires a Java 1.1.5 compliant browser. It does not work with older browsers. You must have version 4.05 or later of Netscape Navigator or MS Explorer 4. To be sure in Netscape, open the Java console window (go to the Communicator menu, and select "java console"): if the first line ends with Java 1.1.5, you should be ok. If the last number is anything less, e.g. 1.1.2, 1.1.3, it will probably have problems. For more information on this software please contact [email protected].

On the map, I have tried to get all the ISPs in Africa. While the geographic locations are approximate, each node should at least be in the right country. If you know an ISP in Africa which is not shown, or a node which is in the wrong country, please let me know with the following form.

This is very much a work in progress, your help is appreciated.
