Background

I am a Senior Member Technical Staff at Thomson Corporate Research since 2004. My lab is located at Burbank (near Los Angeles). I am currently working on metadata issues for media and entertainment. You can still contact me at [email protected].

I received my master and Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, New York, USA, from 1996 until 2004. In particular, I was a Kodak Graduate Fellow and a member of the ADVENT Research Consortium and the Digital Video/Multimedia (DVMM) Lab. I was also awarded a full scholarship for graduate studies in the United States by the Spanish financial institution, "la Caixa". I received my Telecommunications Engineer degree from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain, in 1996. I am also a member of IEEE and ACM.

As part of my research at Columbia University, I focused on multimedia knowledge representation, construction and application, and integration of intelligent and distributed applications for retrieval, navigation and synthesis of multimedia. I was also an active participant in the MPEG-7 standard where I chaired the AHG on MPEG-7 MDS Core Experiments and I was an Editor of the MDS part of the MPEG-7 standard.

I am originally from Spain so it should not surprise you that my full name is actually Ana Belén Benítez Jiménez. In any case, you can think of me as either Ana, what my friends usually do, or Belén, what my relatives usually do. Some of my personal interests are photography, cinema, opera, martial arts, dance, cooking and traveling.
