Plastic is familiar to everyone as a durable and flexible structural material. Organic materials can also be used as electronic materials, which opens a set of exciting new applications in which polymers and small molecule organic materials are key elements to developing a new generation of flexible and large area electronic including displays, lighting, sensors, and photovoltaics.
In this presentation, we will present the potential for flexible organic displays, along with an introduction to the foundational technologies required to enable these devices in the future. Several commercial examples will be discussed including the display format used in the Samsung Galaxy S6, which was built using flexible OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). This presentation will be targeted at a general audience.
This will be the first lecture in a short topical seminar on organic semiconductor devices that will examine, in five one hour lectures the basics of organic semiconductors, the physics of device operation, and topics relating to organic photovoltaics, light emitters, and transistors. Except for the first lecture, the seminar will be at the introductory graduate level.

Professor Yvan Bonnassieux is the head of the organic electronic group and deputy director of LPICM at École Polytechnique in Paris. He defended his PhD at ENS de Cachan in 1998 and was hired by École Polytechnique in 2001. His research focuses on behavioral models for organic devices and analytic and digital circuits design. He is the author or co-author of more than 95 papers and communications, 5 book chapters, and 4 patents.
