Professor Rui Castro received the Aerospace Engineering degree (Licenciatura) in 1998, from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Portugal. He was formerly a research assistant in the Communication Theory and Pattern Recognition group at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Portugal, and, during the summer of 2002, was at Lucent Technologies - Bell Labs research, working on network traffic models. He received his PhD from Rice University, where he was a Rice Graduate Fellow and received the Graduate Student Mentor Award. Most recently, he was a research associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he was a member of the Communications and Signal Processing group. His main research areas are in statistical signal processing and learning theory, specifically in pattern recognition problems and network tomography.
