Scalable and Resilient Hybrid Optical/Electrical Intra-DCN with Multi-Layer SDN Control

This talk will be focused on a flexible and resilient hybrid optical/electrical intra-DCN architecture using low-cost distributed optical switching. By employing centralized SDN control for both the electrical and optical parts of the topology, differentiated treatment of diverse traffic flow types is made possible. Automated and dynamic flow path setup and restoration are demonstrated over an experimental testbed based on the proposed architecture. Moreover, several routing strategies are proposed and compared experimentally using real-time TCP traffic flows. The results show the potential for significant flow completion time reduction and provide insight into the interplay between elephant and mouse flows.

Speaker Bio

Konstantinos Kanonakis is a Research Staff Member at NEC Laboratories America, Princeton, NJ, where he is leading the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) activities of the Optical Networking and Sensing Department. His research is focused on resource allocation, control schemes and architectures for data center, optical access and optical core networks. Previously he worked as a Senior Researcher at Athens Information Technology (AIT), Athens, Greece. At AIT he was the Project Manager for the €3.5M E.U. project ACCORDANCE on OFDMA-PON, as well as the principal co-author and technical coordinator for the project's proposal. Dr. Kanonakis holds 3 U.S. Patents and has several patent applications pending. He has co-authored more than 60 scientific articles in international journals and conferences. He received his Ph.D. and Dipl.-Ing. Degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 2008 and 2004 respectively.
