Configuring Outlook Express to use EE Email Services is relatively straightforward.
Please note that we make use of self-signed SSL certificates to ensure security by
encrypting all email connections. Because these SSL certificates are self-signed
and not issued by a SSL certificate vendor such as Thawte, your email client may
complain about the authenticity of the certificates when you are checking your email
or sending outgoing mail. It is harmless to disregard these messages. Your email
connection is secure despite these harmless warning messages.
Open up Outlook Express and select your current inbox. Select Accounts
from the Tools drop-down menu. See Figure One for an illustration.

Once inside the Internet Accounts section, click on Properties in the right
side panel. See Figure Two for an illustration.

Click on the Servers tab from the Properties page. Make sure that the
incoming mail server is mailbox.ee.columbia.edu. Make sure that the
outgoing mail server is mail.ee.columbia.edu. Note that these server
settings will be identical, regardless of whether you choose to use IMAP or POP. Select
the checkbox that says My server requires authentication and click on
Settings button to the left of it. See Figure Three for an illustration.

From the Settings pop-up window, select Use same settings as my incoming
mail server. We use the same username and password combination to send outgoing mail
as we do to check incoming mail. Note that this setting will be identical whether you choose
to use POP or IMAP. See Figure Four for an illustration.

Click on the Advanced tab and check the box that says This server requires
a secure connection for both incoming and outgoing mail. Make sure the port number for
Outgoing mail (SMTP) is set to 465. For POP users, make sure your Incoming mail
(POP3) port number is set to 995. See Figure Five for an illustration of this.
If you are using IMAP, your Incoming mail (IMAP) port will be set to 993. See
Figure Six for an illustration of this.
