Michael E Kounavis is a senior research scientist working with the Circuits and Systems Research Group at Intel Labs. Michael is responsible for conducting research on novel digital arithmetic and cryptographic algorithms with the aim of accelerating a wide range of client, server and networking applications.

Michael is a co-inventor of the CRC32 SSE4 instruction of the Core i7 processor architecture used for iSCSI CRC generation. He is also a co-inventor of the AES symmetric encryption and carry-less multiplication instructions of Intel’s “Westmere” and “Sandy Bridge” architectures and a co-recipient of an Intel Achievement Award (2008) for his work on the AES instructions, the highest honor for technical achievement in the semiconductor industry.

Michael has co-authored over 70 technical papers and patents in areas including networking, digital arithmetic, security, and cryptography and is a regular program committee member of several conferences and workshops. He received his Ph.D degree from the Electrical Engineering Department at Columbia University in 2004.
