technologies, HUD, show high demand for specialized displays. The requirements for those displays range from factor, resolution, brightness, power consumption, color and contrast, price, lifetime and many more. Currently no display technology can satisfy the requirements for all application fields. Which gave rise to the development very innovative concepts for information display. A versatile technology is organic light emitting diodes. On one hand, the current level of development direct pixel patterning is limited by fine metal masks to around 20 µm. On the other hand the substrate size cannot be indefinitely large and is limited by the fine metal-mask as well. VON ARDENNE has developed a the FMTL-technology which has the potential to overcome both limitations. Displays with direct RGB-patterned pixels have been manufactured with pixel sizes of 10 µm. It will be shown that the FMTL-OLEDs have performances similar to fine metal mask patterned devices with the same setup. It is planned to shrink the pixel size down to 5 µm in 2015 and concepts scaling the substrate size. We sketch the possible impact on applications and market-segments and perspectives from our point of view on the commercialization of the FMTL-technology.

Speaker Bio

The author studied Physics in Munich/Germany and Lund/Sweden obtained a Ph.D. in Dresden at the Institute for Solid State Electronics in Dresden. He worked on the device physics and production methods for organic TFTs at the Fraunhofer EMFT in Munich. In 2005 the author joined Novaled AG in a Customer Project Manager and developed on RGB-OLEDs for Displays, white OLEDs for lighting and other special devices. In 2010, Dr. Burghart was offered a position as Program Manager for Research and Innovation at VON ARDENNE to develop and commercialize the FMTL-technology.
