EE PhD Candidates Are Finalists for Best Student Paper at Conference on Decision and Control

November 10, 2014

The paper entitled "Low-Rank Solutions of Matrix Inequalities With Applications to Polynomial Optimization and Matrix Completion Problems" has been selected as one of the 4 finalists for the best student paper award at the 53rd Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), which is to be held in Los Angles in December 2014. CDC is the flagship conference of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS), which is hosted in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS ), the Japanese Society for Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), and the EUropean Control Association (EUCA). The above paper was written by Ramtin Madani (middle) and Ghazal Fazelnia (right), Somayeh Sojoudi and Javad Lavaei (left). Ramtin and Ghazal are graduate students working in Prof. Lavaei's group and Dr. Somayeh Sojoudi is a research scientist at the NYU School of Medicine. This paper addresses an optimization problem on the theory side, and studies distributed control and energy systems on the application side. As stated by CDC, the main basis of the best paper award competition is originality, clarity, and potential impact on practical applications or theoretical foundations of control.
