EE Alum Hari Sundaram Joins UIUC Departments of Computer Science and Advertising as Associate Professor

The Electrical Engineering Department would like to congratulate Alumnus Hari Sundaram for recently joining the Department of Computer Science as well as with the Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising, at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign as an Associate Professor.

Prof. Sundaram received his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in 2002. While at Columbia, he worked in the Digital Video Multimedia Lab under the direction of Senior Vice Dean, Professor Shih-Fu Chang. After completing his Ph.D., he joined Arizona State University in 2002, where he cofounded the School of Arts, Media and Engineering.

His current research is organized around the question: how can we facilitate cooperative behavior adoption on a large scale? To address this question, his group is working on three interrelated research areas: analysis of social signals in personal networks, design of lightweight wearable sensors to sense physical activity, and developing computational advertising frameworks for persuasion. The applications of his research include public health (encouraging healthy behaviors) and sustainability (reducing energy consumption).

His research has won several best paper awards from the IEEE and the ACM. He also received the Eliahu I. Jury Award from Columbia's Electrical Engineering Department for best Ph.D. dissertation in 2002. He is an associate editor for ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications.
