Abstract

In this paper, we present the design of a content-aware network adaptation system for MPEG-4 video delivery. The scheme comprises a number novel features enabling the support for application-specific adaptation needs inside networks. By exploiting video content and user preference an online utility generator formulates the bandwidth utility functions and scaling profiles to capture application-specific adaptation capability and preference, respectively. The utility generator employs video content classification to speedup processing and adaptive prediction to keep the generated utility functions meaningful over network adaptation time-scales. The signaling system leverages MPEG-4 system structure to efficiently deliver utility functions and scaling profiles to network adaptation agents. Network adaptation is in the form of utility-fair bandwidth renegotiation using profile-based media scaling. We present the design, implementation and evaluation of our MPEG-4 adaptation system. The experimental results presented in the paper demonstrate that the proposed content-aware network adaptation system represents a promising new approach to delivering scalable MPEG-4 media over time-varying networks such as wireless networks
