2008

April: Congratulations to Junfeng He, Wei Liu, Jun Wang, and Dong Xu.  Each has a paper accepted for publication in the upcoming IEEE Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) conference. Papers may be downloaded from link DVMM paper site year 2008. Also congratulations to Jun for having his new work on transductive graph-based learning accepted for publication in International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML).

March: Columbia DVMM lab is pleased to release a software program for detecting near-duplicate images for image/video retrieval applications. Please visit the link for the download instructions.

2007

Oct: Congratulations to DVMM Ph.D. student Lyndon Kennedy for being selected as one of the IBM Watson Emerging Leaders in Multimedia 2007. The awardees, selected from a large pool of nominees, are highlighted in a two-day workshop discussing state of art and trend of multimedia research.

June: Prof. Chang gave a keynote speech at International Workshop on Image Analysis for Multimedia Interactive Services, Greece, June 2007. The title of his talk is "Advances and Open Issues for Digital Image/Video Search".

2006

Nov: Congratulations to Winston Hsu for successfully completing the PhD defense exams! He has joined National Taiwan University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science Engineering.

Nov: Congratulations to Dr. John R. Smith, a DVMM alumnus, for being elected to IEEE Fellow with citation - for contributions to multimedia content analysis, retrieval and adaptation.

Oct: Congratulations to Winston Hsu and Lyndon Kennedy for having their paper included in the best paper session at ACM Multimedia 2006, a prestigious conference with a 16% acceptance rate. Only one paper from the content track receives such recognition this year.

2005

Nov: Hearty congratulations to Tian-Tsong, Jessie, and Lexing for receiving the Best Student Paper Award at the prestigious ACM Multimedia Conference 2005! Three top student papers were chosen from the accepted pool and the final winner was selected after the on-site presentation.

Oct: Prof. Shih-Fu Chang has been selected as the new Editor in Chief for the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, for the duration of 2006-8.

Oct: Congratulations to Lexing for receiving the prestigious IBM Research Josef Raviv Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship, given to only one recipient selected from more than 30 outstanding applicants.

Oct: Congratulations to Shahram, Lexing, Yong, and Dongqing for their successfully completing the PhD defense exams! Shahram and Lexing have joined IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. Yong has started working at Motorola Research and Dongqing is joining Thomson Research in Burbank CA.

2004

Oct: Dongqing Zhang and Jessie Hsu are selected as the outstanding TAs respectively for Spring 03 and Spring 04.

Sept: Farewell and best wishes to research scientist, Masami Mizutani of Fujitsu Labs

Sept: Lexing Xie winning the IBM Student Paper Award in the ICIP 2004 conference.Despite the high competitiveness of the award, Lexing's paper emerged as one of the top 3 papers in the ICIP 2004 conference. The details of the paper is as below:

"Discovering Meaningful Multimedia Patterns with Audio-Visual Concepts and Associated Text," Lexing Xie, L. Kennedy, S.-F. Chang, A.Divakaran, H. Sun and C.-Y. Lin.

July: Welcoming Visiting Scientist, Dr. Jinwoong Kim, from Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea. Our great honor to have Dr. Jinwoong Kim visiting our research group. Dr. Kim is currently the director of the Broadcast Media Research Group in ETRI, Korea.

May: Welcoming Visiting Scientist, Dr. Hyun Lim, from Mokpo National University, Korea. It is our pleasure to have Dr. Hyun Lim joining us. Dr. Lim's research interests include image protection and authentication using digital watermarking technique, and FPGA implementation of image processing algorithm. 

Feb: Lexing was among the outstanding TAs in the school of Engineering and Applied Science for the fun in deciphering papers and discussing problems in multimedia analysis during Fall 2003 EE6882 Statistical Methods for Video Indexing and Analysis. 

2003

Dec: Prof. Chang Elected IEEE Fellow. Our hearty congratulations on Prof. Chang's being elected to IEEE Class of 2004 Fellows for his "contributions to digital video and multimedia technologies". The DVMM group looks forward to more exciting research under his outstanding leardership.

Sept: Welcoming Naoko Nitta and Masami Mizutani. We are most pleased to have Naoko Nitta and Masami Mizutani to join DVMM as visiting scientists, following Masaki Miura and Ryoma Oami who have just completed their research attachment with DVMM recently. Naoko Nitta is from the reputed Osaka University of Japan while Masami Mizutani is a researcher in Fujitsu Laboratory, Japan. We wish them a pleasant stay in New York.

Aug: Farewell to Visiting Scientist Ryoma Oami. Ryoma Oami, a visiting scientist for NEC Japan, has completed his one-year research attachment with DVMM Lab. We had a farewell lunch for him in Tomo Japanese restaurant before his departure. Photos and videos are taken during the event.

July: Masaki Miura Returning to Japan. Masaki Miura just finished his 1-year visiting research with DVMM Lab and will return to Fujitsu Lab Japan. His stay has been very productive and enjoyable -- we miss his Japanese lessons! He participates in the video surveillance mining project and has conducted extensive experiments in face detection and tracking. We wish him continuing success in his career!

June: Ana and Shahram Won Prizes in IBM Watson Workshop on Multimedia. Congratulations to Ana and Shahram for winning the best student poster presentations at the IBM Watson Workshop on Multimedia, held on June 20 2003. Ana's project on IMKA, constructing multimedia knowledge network, was awarded the first prize. Shahram's work on echocardiogram video indexing and summarization won the 2nd prize.

Dr. Ching-Ying Lin Won Young Author Paper Award 2003

Great news from DVMM alumnus, Dr. Ching-Yung Lin. His paper on semi-fragile authentication watermarking published in IEEE TCSVT has been selected to be the winner of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society 2003 Young Author Paper Award.

Best wishes to recent DVMM graduates. Congratulations, Dr. Hari Sundaram and Dr. Alex Jaimes!

Hari Sundaram has started his tenure-track faculty position at Arizona State University, with Department of Computer Science and Institute for Studies in the Arts. He is working on several fantastic projects related to the Media and Arts Center.

Alex Jaimes is joining FujiXerox Research near Tokyo after his exciting travel over south America and a productive mini-postdoc at U. de Chile.

 

Awards

April 2008: Congratulations to Eric and Wei Jiang for receiving the Millman Outstanding TA Award in 2008. The awards are given by the Department each year to two students for their outstanding performance and contributions as Teaching Assistant. The list of awards of previous years is here.

ACM Multimedia Conference Best Student Paper Award, 2002

In Oct. 2002, DVMM members, Hari Sundaram and Lexing Xie received the ACM Multimedia Conference Best Student Paper Award for their paper entitled “A Utility Framework for the Automatic Generation of Audio-Visual Skims”(co-authored with Prof. Shih-Fu Chang) in France. This is a very selective conference with a paper acceptance rate of 16%. Hari and Lexing deserve the recognition of the fruit of their hard work and passionate dedication to research. 

2nd Prize Best Paper Award at the IEEE Sarnoff Symposium, 2002

Raj Kumar has won the 2nd Prize Best Paper Award at the IEEE Sarnoff Symposium, March 2002 with a $500 cash prize! His paper, co-authored with Prof. Chang and Dr. Mihaela van der Schaar is entitled“FGS+: Optimizing the Joint SNR-Temporal Video Quality in MPEG-4 Fine Grained Scalable Coding".

Jury Award for Best Thesis

Over the years, several DVMM alumni have received the Jury Award for Best Thesis in Communications, Signal Processing and Systems from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. This has set an inspirational and chllalenging tradition for future DVMMers.

Di Zhong (2000) with thesis entitled "Segmentation, Index and Summarization of Digital Video Content"
