Professor Coffman rejoined the Columbia University EE faculty in the summer of 2000. During most of the period since his first appointment at Columbia, he spent 20 years at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J. He is an IEEE fellow, an ACM fellow, and a distinguished member of technical staff (ret.) at Bell Labs. He is currently an editor for the Journal of Interconnection Networks, the Journal of Algorithms, and the Journal of Scheduling. In the past, he has also served as an editor for the Journal of the ACM and the SIAM Journal of Computing, among others. He has written well over 200 papers with well over a hundred different collaborators. As one of the builders of the SDC/ARPA time-sharing system, he qualifies as one of the many coinventors of general purpose time-shared computers and one of many coinventors of computer networking.

Paul Diament joined the EE faculty in 1963. His teaching and research areas are in all phases of electromagnetics and wave propagation, including microwaves, antennas, optics, radiation statistics, plasmas, wave interactions, relativistic electron beams, and transient electromagnetic phenomena. He is the author of Wave Transmission and Fiber Optics (Macmillan, 1990). His recent book is titled Dynamic Electromagnetics (Prentice Hall, 1999).

Dan Ellis has been with the Columbia University Department of Electrical Engineering since fall 2000, before which he was a senior research scientist at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley, California. Professor Ellis is a member of the IEEE, the Acoustical Society of America, and the International Speech Communications Association. He has served on the organizing committee of several meetings, including the IEEE workshop on Applications of Signal Processing to Acoustics and Audio, and several recent workshops on Computational Auditory Scene Analysis. He is also the administrator of the AUDITORY email discussion list.

Predrag Jelenkovic is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and member of the COMET Group. His area of interest include long-tailed/ subexponential/long dependent traffic models. Additionally he has worked on dynamic channel allocation algorithms, caching algorithms, advanced reservation / packing problems, and information theory. Predrag Jelenkovic recieved his Ph.D. in computer science in 1996 and an NSF Career Award in 1999.

Peter R. Kinget received the engineering degree (summa cum laude) in electrical and mechanical engineering and the Ph.D. (summa cum laude with congratulations of the jury) in electrical engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in 1990 and 1996, respectively.

From 1991 to 1995, he received a graduate fellowship from the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (NFWO) to work as a research assistant at the ESAT-MICAS Laboratory of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. From 1996 to 1999 he was at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, in Murray Hill, New Jersey, as a member of technical staff in the Design Principles Department. From 1999 to 2002 he held various technical and management positions in IC design and development at Broadcom, CeLight, and MultiLink. In the summer of 2002 he joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Columbia University. He is also a consultant to industry. His research interests are in analog and RF integrated circuits and signal processing. He has published over fifty papers in journals and conferences and holds three U.S. patents with several applications under review. His research group has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the Semiconductor Research Corporation, an IBM Faculty Award, and from several grants from semiconductor companies.

Dr. Kinget is a senior member of the IEEE and associate editor of the IEEE Journal of Solid State Circuits (2003– ). He has served as a member of the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference (CICC) (2000–2005) and currently serves on the technical program committees of the Symposium on VLSI Circuits (2003– ); the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (2005– ); and the European Solid-State Circuits Conference (2005– ).

My research interests are at the intersection of computational neuroscience, information/communications theory and systems biology.

In silico, my focus is on time encoding and information representation in sensory systems, and, spike processing and neural computation in the cortex. In this work, I investigate rigorous methods of encoding information in the time domain as well as massive neural computation algorithms in the spike domain. Furthermore, I am interested in genetic, structural, functional, and plasticity principles of the olfactory system in mammals and simple invertebrates.

In vivo, my focus is on the olfactory system of the drosophila. My current work primarily addresses the nature of odor signal processing in the antennal lobe of the fruit fly.

Nick received the B.S.E.E. degree from the City College of New York, and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

He is currently a professor in the electical engineering department at Columbia University. From 1996 to 2001 he was a technical leader in AT&T laboratories, from 1976 to 1996 he was at AT&T Bell Laboratories, first as a member of the technical staff and then as a department head, and from 1968 to 1976 he was a member of the technical staff at the RCA David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton, New Jersey.

Nick is currently the editor in chief of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, on the steering committee of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, a member of the NSF experts group for the initiative on integrated sensing, computation, video, and networking, and on the advisory committee for the area of excellence in information technology in Hong Kong. He has been an advisor on data networking to the United Nations, the National Science Foundation, the Rome Air Development Center, the Canadian Institute for Telecommuncations Research, the Information Technology Research Center, the Telecommunications Research Institute of Ontario, and other organizations. He has served as the editor for data communications for the IEEE Transactions on Communications, the editor for networking for the Journal of the ACM, and as a guest editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. He has also been on the advisory boards for two start-up companies, Enrichnet and Brightlink.

He was awarded the RCA Laboratories Outstanding Achievement Award in 1970, the Bell Laboratories Distinguished Technical Staff Award in 1984, the IEEE's Leonard G. Abraham Prize Paper Award in 1985 and 1987, and the William R. Bennett Prize Paper Award in 1997, was made a fellow of the IEEE in 1989, and received the 1996 R&D 100 award for his work on document marking.

Steven M. Nowick is an associate professor of computer science and electrical engineering, and a member of the Computer Engineering Program, at Columbia University. He received a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 1993 and a B.A. from Yale University in 1976.

Richard M. Osgood Jr. joined Columbia University in 1981 and became Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics in 1988. He served as an associate director of Brookhaven National Laboratory from 2000 to 2002 and its acting Nanocenter Director, 2002. Professor Osgood was, with Professor Yang, a cofounder of the Columbia Microelectronics Sciences Laboratories (MSL), and has served as director or codirector of MSL and the Columbia Radiation Laboratory (CRL). He is a member of the ACS and MRS, and a fellow of the IEEE, OSA, and the APS. He was coeditor of Applied Physics (1983�95) and associate editor of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics (1981�88). Professor Osgood has served as a consultant to numerous research institutions and government agencies including MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He is also on the DARPA Defense Sciences Research Council (Materials Research Council) and the Los Alamos National Laboratory Visiting Advisory Board (Chemical Sciences and Technology Division). Professor Osgood has served as councilor of the Materials Research Society, as a member of the DOE Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee, and the scientific advisory board of Brookhaven National Laboratories. In 1991, Dr. Osgood received the R. W. Wood Award from the Optical Society of America, and was invited to deliver the OIDTA lecture at the Japanese Optical Association.

He was a member of technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, and an associate department head at GMD-Fokus (Berlin), before joining the computer science and electrical engineering departments at Columbia University, New York. He is currently chair of the Department of Computer Science. He is a division editor of the Journal of Communications and Networks, and an editor of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, and the Surveys and Tutorials, and former editor of the IEEE Internet Computing Magazine and IEEE Transactions on Image Processing. He is general chair of ACM Multimedia 2004. He has been a member of the board of governors of the IEEE Communications Society and of the ACM SIGCOMM executive committee, former chair of the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committees on Computer Communications and the Internet and has been technical program chair of Global Internet, Infocom, NOSSDAV and IPtel. He also was a member of the IAB (Internet Architecture Board). Protocols codeveloped by him are now Internet standards, used by almost all Internet telephony and multimedia applications. His research interests include Internet multimedia systems, quality of service, and performance evaluation.He serves as chief scientist for SIPquest, Inc., and as former chief scientific advisor for Ubiquity Software Corporation. Amiya K. Sen joined the EE faculty in 1963. He has been engaged in theoretical and experimental research on a variety of basic problems in plasma physics and some outstanding problems in the controlled thermonuclear fusion for many years. His current research interests include studies of important plasma instabilities like trapped particle and ion/electron temperature gradient instabilities. He is also working on unique feedback control techniques of distributed parameter systems to stabilize these instabilities with firstever great experimental success. The critical unresolved problems of spectra of plasma turbulence and the consequent anomalous transport are being investigated both theoretically and experimentally. He has pioneered a new paradigm for plasma transport, which challanges the 50 year-old gold standard of Bohm/gyro-Bohm scaling.

He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and IEEE. He has been consultant/advisor to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation. He received the Great Teacher Award of Columbia University in 1984.

Ken Shepard received a B.S.E. degree in 1987 from Princeton University, where he was valedictorian of his graduating class and received the Phi Beta Kappa prize for the highest academic standing. He went on to receive the M. S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering with a minor in physics from Stanford University in 1988 and 1992, respectively, on a fellowship from the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation. His Ph.D. research, also funded by a special Creativity in Engineering grant from the National Science Foundation, focussed on the physics of nanoscale devices. He was awarded the Hertz Foundation doctoral thesis prize in 1992, given each year to the best Ph.D. thesis from among Hertz fellows.

In 1992, he became a research staff member in the VLSI Design Department at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, and was promoted to manager in 1996. At IBM, he was responsible for the design methodology for IBM's first high-performance microprocessors for the S/390 mainframe (Alliance project). This design methodology became the basis for subsequent microprocessor designs at IBM. He received IBM research division awards in 1995 and 1997 for his contributions to the Alliance project team.

In 1997, he joined Columbia University, where he is now associate professor. At the same time, he cofounded CadMOS Design Technology, an EDA start-up which pioneered PacifIC and CeltIC, the first tools for large-scale signal integrity analysis of digital integrated circuits. The success of these tools led Cadence to acquire CadMOS in 2001.

Current research interests include design tools for advanced CMOS technology, including the CAD work in SOI circuits and extraction approaches for inductance that are being commercialized by Cadence. Professor Shepard and his students are also working on on-chip test and measurement circuitry including on-chip sampling oscilloscopes, low-power design techniques for digital signal processing, circuits for low-power intrachip communications, and CMOS gene chips. He received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 1998, the Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award from the Columbia Engineering School in 1999, a best paper award at the 2001 International Conference on Computer Design, best paper runner-up at the 2003 International Symposium on Asynchronous Circuits, and a winning entry in the 2003 ISLPED Low-Power Design Contest.

Professor Shepard is program chair for the 2002 International Conference on Computer Design (ICCD) and general chair of the 2003 ICCD. He was program chair of ISQED 2002 and conference cochair of ISQED 2003 and has served on the program committees of DAC, ICCD, ICCAD, GLS-VLSI, ISQED, and Tau. He was associate editor of IEEE transactions on VLSI from 1998–2001. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

Professor Shepard participates in the MARCO Focus Center on Circuits and Software Solutions.

Yannis P. Tsividis is Charles Batchelor Professor of Electrical Engineering. Starting with the first fully integrated MOS operational amplifier, which he demonstrated in 1976, he has done extensive work in analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits at the device, circuit, system, and computer simulation level. He and his students have been responsible for several contributions, ranging from precision device modeling and novel circuit building blocks to new techniques for analog and mixed-signal processing, self-correcting chips, switched-capacitor network theory, RF integrated circuits, mixed analog-digital VLSI computation and the creation of computer simulation programs. This work has resulted in several patents in several countries. He is the recipient of the 1984 IEEE W. R. G. Baker Best Paper Award, the 1986 European Solid-State Circuits Conference Best Paper Award, and the 1998 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Guillemin-Caure Best Paper Award. He is corecipient of the 1987 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Darlington Best Paper Award and the 2003 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference L. Winner Outstanding Paper Award. He is a fellow of the IEEE, and received a Golden Jubilee Medal from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 2000. At Columbia, he has received the 1991 Great Teacher Award from the Alumni Association, the 1998 Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award from the Engineering School Alumni Association, and the 2003 Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching. In 2005, he received the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Professor Wen Wang's current research interests are in the areas of ultrahigh speed electronics, heterogeneous materials integration, and semiconductor optoelectronics, including lasers and photodetectors.

He joined the Electrical Engineering Department in 1987 where he is Thayer Lindsey Professor. Between 1981 and 1982 he worked at the Rockwell Science Center and between 1982 and 1987 he worked at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. During Fall 1986, he was a Visiting Associate Professor with the EECS dept at MIT. He has contributed some 250 journal articles in the areas of heterostructure device physics, high speed transistors, semiconductor lasers, photodetectors, molecular beam epitaxy, and surface science. He is a fellow of the IEEE, American Physical Society, and a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Electron Device Society. He received his Ph.D. and master's degrees in electrical engineering at Cornell University, and the bachelor's degree in physics from the National Taiwan University.

Professor Xiaodong Wang was an assistant professor from July 1998 to December 2001 in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University. In January 2002, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Columbia University, as an assistant professor. Dr. Wang's research interests fall in the general areas of computing, signal processing, and communications. He has worked in the areas of wireless communications, statistical signal processing, parallel and distributed computing, nanoelectronics, and quantum computing. He has published extensively in these areas. Dr. Wang has received the 1999 NSF CAREER Award. He has also received the 2001 IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award.

Charles A. Zukowski joined the EE faculty in 1985. He is the author of the book The Bounding Approach to VLSI Circuit Simulation (Kluwer Academic, 1986), which explores topics circuit theory, mathematics, and software design. He is currently working on designing high-speed and low-energy digital ICs for communications networks. Examples include switches, buffers, packet error checkers, and time-division multiplexers. His current interests range from circuit architecture to software analysis tools, and he consults in the field of CMOS IC design. He is a recipient of a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the NSF in the field of CAD. He has also been active in the IEEE both as a reviewer and in the organization of conferences.
