Professor Paisley’s Machine Learning Algorithms Help Bring New Insights in Study of Earthquakes

In a new study published in Science Advances and funded through Columbia University's Research Initiatives in Science and Engineering (RISE), co-author associate professor John Paisley uses machine learning tools to analyze patterns in earthquake seismograms from a dataset of 46,000 earthquakes at The Geysers geothermal field in California.

Michal Lipson, Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering and professor of applied physics, as well as a Columbia Nano Initiative Executive Committee member, has been named the recipient of the 2019 IEEE Photonics Award for her outstanding achievements in photonics.
