The Electrical Engineering Department community mourns the death of Adjunct Professor Lurng-Kuo Liu, who passed away on May 4 while on business in Saudi Arabia. He was 50 years old.
Dr. Lurng-Kuo Liu, a Services Architect of IBM, taught at Columbia University both in 2008 and 2009 in the graduate course of Multicore Processor Platform, Programming & Applications. He made pioneering contributions in High Performance Computing and Multicore Computing solutions architect and research. His research specialized in multiple platforms such as BlueGene /P /Q, Power 7, IBM Power Edge of Network, the Cell Broadband Engine processor, and GPUs.
From 2001 to 2004, he managed the BlueGene/L (BG/L) supercomputer project, leading to the success of the BlueGene/L systems, which were ranked as No. 1 in the top 500 supercomputer list from 2004 to 2007. He developed broad solutions covering multiple industrial workloads including Financial Services/Modeling/High Frequency Trading, Digital Media, Seismic, Stream Processing, and Low Latency Messaging.
Dr. Liu was loved by students as a great teacher and mentor. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. A funeral service will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at:
